Sarah and Andrew are just good people. Andrew lives with and provides full time care to his ailing grandfather and Sarah is a medical social worker focusing on elder care. I grew up next to my grandparents and it has been one of the dearest relationships of my life so to see two people dedicate their lives to the elderly made me love them all the more. You can see a little more about Andrew and his grandfather’s home in a wonderful article on Back Down South.

The first time I met Sarah and Andrew was on their wedding day – well, to be more accurate, their second wedding day. They married in a civiil service a few months prior to their proper ceremony in Alabama so that Andrew’s grandfather could be present at their nuptials. Their ceremony was held at a gorgeous private residence in Winston-Salem, NC. There was so many personal details – for instance, Andrew’s dad, Reverend David Hull, performed the ceremony. Their friends sang hymns during the ceremony and finally, Andrew’s bluegrass band played during the ceremony. It was truly amazing.

Many thanks go out to the vendors and my second photographer Jamie Lynn for helping make the day so beautiful. And a big congrats to the happy couple!

Occasionally, the photo gods smile on me a little more than usual – an unexpected thing for sure at 5:30 in the morning on a sweltering Myrtle Beach morning…

Meet Savannah, a softball playing beauty who could give any supermodel a run for their money. Rarely have I photographed someone who has such ease and poise in front of the camera. No matter what I asked her to do, she accomplished it as though it was the most natural thing in the world. Now, I am as camera shy as they come – most photographers are (a dirty little secret we don’t want people to know!) And in today’s camera saturated world, most people have an automatic and practiced smile and pose for the camera. What we as photographers try to do is get past that protective shell and show the real you behind that mask. There was no mask with Savannah… She just looked into and past the camera and was her real self, naturally. She was an absolute joy to photograph.

I tend to go for the dramatic, even the cinematic in my images and I love the scope and scale of Savannah so small on such a big field. It’s my favorite image from the entire day.

When Savannah’s mom and I were discussing the goals of the shoot, she wanted images that really talked about the two sides of her girl’s personality – her very girly nature off the field and her fierceness on it. I love the juxtaposition we were able to accomplish by simply putting her on the field in her eyelet dress. But even more powerful to me was when we added the eye black while she was still in her dress. To me, it was the most perfect statement of who she is a this moment in her life.

So why on earth do photographers shoot so early in the morning – it’s certainly not because I spring out of bed at 4:00 in the morning rarin’ to go – quite the opposite. It’s because of the light, and occasionally, because of the mist. Simply magical and oh so very elusive…

Zena and Paul married this weekend in what I can only describe as an epicly elegant Greek Orthodox event. It was so huge, it’s going to take me a while to get the gallery ready but I do have Zena’s gorgeous bridal session to hold everyone over!

The weddings I love the most are the ones where there are lots of Love Notes. To me, a love note is not just a written message, but rather it is the references not just to your Beloved, but also to your family and friends. It anchors everyone to your wedding, gives them a sense of ownership and makes them all the more grateful that they are your family. Katie and Sean chose beautiful St. Mary’s Chapel on the grounds of St. Mary’s School where her grandmother attended. (It’s one of my favorite wedding venues in the Carolinas. I am obsessed with its intimacy and quality of light.) Their rockin’ reception followed at Cobblestone Hall just down the street.
And stay tuned to Katie’s bridal session in the next few days. You know how I love a brave bride and Katie definitely embraced that concept! Just wait until you see them. She is spectacular!
Many thanks to all my fellow vendors who always make my job such a beautiful joy. And a special thanks to my second photographer, Jessica, who helped capture all the pretty!
And if you want to see the whole gallery of images, head over to Katie and Sean’s wedding website! Be sure to sigh the guestbook too!

©2013, Traci Arney Photography. www.traciarneyphotography.comFrom Sean about Katie:
Q. Tell me 3 things you really like about your Beloved.
A. “3 things…hmmmm, that’s a tough one. How about 2? J/K 🙂 More like 100 things, but let me give you 3 good ones for starters:
1. Katie’s carefree spirit, upbeat attitude and positive outlook on life. No matter the situation, she always finds the positive in things…whether that be the unfortunate scenario at hand or some negative person you could be dealing with. She always finds a way to keep a smile on her pretty face.
2. Katie is extremely generous, caring, and thoughtful. She always puts others first before herself and goes out of her way to make sure I am happy. She is truly a selfless individual and loves me unconditionally.
3. She is the most beautiful girl I have ever met…inside and out. I think she thinks I’m joking when I tell her she looks the prettiest right before bed and in the morning…but it is the truth 🙂
4. She is extremely talented, handy, and artistic….3 things I am not and envy.”

From Katie about Sean:
Q. Tell me 3 things you really like about your Beloved.
A. “He’s funny. He’s silly. He’s super sweet and always makes people feel at ease. He is super sweet to me and tells me I look beautiful even after I’ve been crying. He loves meeting new people and trying new things. He is so caring and kind and wants everyone to have fun. He is generous and selfless. That’s more than three… But there are so many, I can’t keep it to just three!”

©2013, Traci Arney Photography. www.traciarneyphotography.comQ. Who proposed to who? How long did it take? Were you surprised?
A. “Sean proposed on September 14th while we were at the beach in Delaware visiting our parents. There was nothing out of the ordinary so I was totally suprised! He proposed in my childhood bedroom while our parents were downstairs getting ready for us to all go to dinner. It was the most wonderful weekend of celebrating all together!”

I love weddings and I love babies but this was my first surprise party and I truly hope it’s not my last. Terry planned this gorgeous event so well that Jan never knew what hit her and the whole extended family was there to celebrate! Josephine’s Bistro in Greensboro was the perfect backdrop and the food was stellar! If your nearby, drop in for a glass of wine or a bite to eat!

I am a fan of bravery in its many forms and for this engagement session, bravery included Zena and Paul wading onto a flooded island, climbing on the prow of a boat, and cuddling on the narrow underpinnings of a bridge in the middle of Lake Norman. The trust that they placed in my vision and the fearlessness they attacked this shoot with were absolutely spectacular and it translated into some truly beautiful images! I can’t wait for their wedding!

Tara and Sam are doctors finishing up their medical degrees at Duke University. Somewhere in the midst of their exams, rounds, and taking care of some really sick people, they managed to plan a simply gorgeous and very personal wedding at one of my favorite venues in North Carolina, Fearrington Village. I grew up wandering around my grandparents’ farm, chasing the cows, and getting into loads of mischief so I always feel right at home at this beautiful, upscale farm venue. (Note: the farm I grew up on, while very beautiful, could definitely not be called “upscale”.) What impressed me most, aside from the Tara and Sam’s obvious glee at getting married to one another, was the intricate and personal details throughout the wedding. I always talk about the Love Notes that every wedding should be filled with and this wedding had them in spades – signage telling their story, the little gifts from the bride and groom, the signature cocktail that was reminiscent of their favorite popsicle shop in Durham.  If you didn’t know Tara and Sam before you came to the wedding, you knew then well when you left. It was awesome!

What’s your story? How did you two meet?

“Sam and I met in medical school in upstate NY. We started dating during orientation week! Actually on our first “date” we went grocery shopping… very romantic! Our class was only about 100 students so everyone knew that we were dating rather quickly. Many of our friends took bets about how long we would stay together! We’ve been together now for almost 6 years and are about to start our final year of residency at Duke.” – Tara

What was the best gift you were ever given by your Beloved?

“My family has a tradition of reading the Dr. Seuss Happy Birthday to You book on everyone’s birthday. I told Sam that it never quite feels like my birthday when I’m away from home since we don’t read this book. For my birthday this year, Sam bought me the book and we read it together. I got choked up when I saw it!” – Tara

Why did you choose Fearrington?
“I hate the typical wedding venue with the standard reception hall. I was so excited to find a place that was so beautiful and unusual. And those cows are pretty cute!” – Tara

What is unique about you as a couple?

Tell me 3 things you really like about your Beloved.
“1. She is the sweetest person I have ever met, she puts everyone else first and cares more about others more than I ever met.
 2. She has made me a better person. She finally made me grow up, she made me appreciate my family, and centers me.
 3. She corrects my punctuation. Without her I’d have commas splattered everywhere.” – Sam

Stephanie is in the wedding industry – she works for the Proximity and O.Henry Hotels working with their wedding clients. When I met her and we started talking her wedding, I knew it would be a stunner. It was. What I was most thrilled with was the sincerity and laid back catering to their guests. Even a little rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the this sweet outdoor ceremony and reception!

What do you most love about your Beloved?

“She is so thoughtful, it’s amazing. She makes me feel like she and her own feelings are the last things she ever thinks about and that I’m number one. It makes me feel so incredibly special.” – Michael

What do you most love about your Beloved?

“Where do I begin!? Michael knows me better than I know myself, and can tell me what I’m thinking before I have a chance to sit down and decipher and over analyze it for myself. He won’t let me get away with not being honest about my feelings, and I appreciate that so much. He challenges me, and always treats me with respect.” – Stephanie

Who Proposed to who? How long did it take? Were you surprised?

“It was a random Thursday night, and I was COMPLETELY surprised when Mike proposed. We try to have weekly date nights, and I thought it was just a typical night out to dinner… until I was blindsided by an unexpected stop at the Bog Garden on the way to dinner! We had been dating a little less than 2 years and I was so so excited to have that ring on my finger. After several minutes of “oh my goshing” and crying, and squealing, and jumping up and down, I said yes a thousand times and we proceeded with the rest of our special date night!” – Stephanie

I have been lucky enough over the years to form relationships and friendships with many of my couples and I know the deep and long-lasting friendship I have found in Jaimie is a very special gift. We have spent hour upon hour in photography sessions, hanging out over coffees and talking on the phone. Her love of art, her compassion, her genuine glee at life, and her overarching bravery are just a few qualities that make me love her. Nathan, take care of her but if she disappears for a few hours, she probably with me!!!

Here are a few of the gems from her incredible bridal session. She went anywhere we thought would be dramatic and beautiful, she did anything I asked of her, and she laughed at the rain… Bravery matters.

The wedding was magical and relaxed and completely joyful. Nathan completely adores Jaimie and Jaimie breathes for Nathan.

“He says that he fell in love with me the first time he saw me in ninth grade, but I still don’t know if that’s true! Regardless, I could never spend my life with anyone else and he’d say the same. We are so thankful to have one another.”

“Who Proposed to who? How long did it take? Were you surprised?”

Nathan proposed to me after about four years at the family’s lake house. I was completely shocked! I didn’t even say “yes” because I had my hands over my mouth and nose–I just kept nodding my head up and down because I couldn’t speak and I was crying! I still remember what he said because I kept replaying it in my mind so I would always remember. He took a knee and said, “Jaimie, we’ve been together for almost five years now, and I love you so much. I want to spend the rest of my life with you so will you marry me?” Short, sweet, and right to the point–just how I expected he would do it. Afterwards, we went inside and stared at each other, smiling and laughing like crazy. I think we just both just wanted to be in that moment for a little longer by ourselves, without calling and telling anyone.

What is the absolute best thing about your Beloved?

“His playfulness and positive outlook. He is definitely a jokester, but he is also so kind and gentle. When you meet him, you will definitely feel happier just from being around him because that is just what Nathan is–happy Nathan, on the other hand, is a happy-go-lucky type of person. He is most happy when going with the flow and not stressing the small stuff which is what I admire most about him. I wish I could be more like him and he wishes he could be more like me;!” – Jamie about her Nathan

“Her best attribute is her trustworthiness or loyalty. She is a very driven and independent person–a.k.a. stubborn.  She is the type of person that tends to be hard on herself and stick to a somewhat strict schedule.  Honestly, I think what we love most about each other is that we can still have those grade school conversations that last for hours into the early morning and also, that we continue to learn new things about one another.” – Nathan about his Jaimie

Adam and Amanda were my first wedding couple of the season and they were such a gift. Joy, ease, and generosity were the traits I saw in each of them from the very first moment until they drove away into the night. What a great day!

“Tell us how you met? What’s your story?”

We having been dating for 6 years this past March. We met in high school and started dating after having a great time at a school dance together. We clicked immediately, easily making each other laugh, finishing each others sentences, and having so much in common. I felt like I had known him forever. We are both very family oriented and get along wonderfully with each other’s family.

“Who Proposed to who? How long did it take? Were you surprised?”

After ring shopping in August, Adam proposed on New Year’s Eve at our house. It was the perfect proposal (in my opinion at least). After working that day, I came home and we watched the New Year’s Eve special on tv. With 1 minute left, Adam told me that there was still a present left in my stocking hanging from the mantle. I had the biggest grin on my face as I reached in and left the ring box. With just seconds left in 2011, he proposed and we rung in 2012 with a kiss. After dating for so long, I would be lying if I didn’t think about getting engaged often, however, on this night it was the last thing on my mind after a long day of work. I was so surprised and couldn’t imagine it happening any other way!

As many of you know, Jaimie and I have been spending a lot of time together with simply stunning engagement, boudoir and bridal sessions. Plus we talk a lot because she’s just awesome on every level. Having that sort of personal connection is not just great for the heart, it’s also great for the photographic soul. There is so much more to come but for now, here’s a quick sneak peek from the wedding at Our Lady of Grace in Greensboro, NC followed by her epic bridal session in Madison. And if you want to see the whole session, you can follow the link to her PASS gallery!

Jaimie and Nate's Rehearsal Sneak Peek

I couldn’t help myself… Had to share this sweet image from Jaimie and Nate’s rehearsal tonight at Our Lady of Grace in Greensboro, NC. I wish I could shoot the whole ceremony from this location but, alas, the Father has nixed it.

Amanda and Adam were married last Saturday in a gorgeous, light filled wedding at Deberry Farm in Kernersville, NC. I just couldn’t wait to share a few of my favorite images!  (Even the chickens got into the act during the guys’ formals!) Stay tuned for the rest of the wedding coming soon

The RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, NC is one of the local events that is near and dear to my heart and a joy to shoot each year. This time, I got the chance to shoot the opening night Gala at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA). The backdrop to the event was the installation Afterlife by Jacco Oliver and Jennifer West. Guests were wowed by the projection pieces as mach as by the amazing food and drinks.

And it’s gorgeous… Take a look at the new beauty that just arrived on our doorstep.

As a child, I always loved pulling out my grandparents’ photo albums. The images held within them captured my imagination and had such an evocative beauty all their own. I felt a connection to my past and I also had a vision of my future – of growing up and being that bride one day or holding my own babies. Any child looking at their history preserved within their families’ photo albums feels that. For all the wonders of the modern age, a digital image will never have the power that a physical print does. Prints don’t disappear when the computer crashes, and they will outlast every change of digital format. Human beings are collectors and lovers of artifacts. That’s why we make prints and why we make albums – to preserve our history and tell our future families all our stories, hopes and dreams.

All of our albums are 100% archival and made with the finest materials that will last the generations. Check out the sample album of Blake and Lindsey’s Sapelo Island, GA wedding. It is 8×12 inches and covered in a beautiful sea glass green raw silk. It arrived in a beautiful black leather box for presentation and protection. I absolutely cannot wait to start sharing with all our new couples.

Blog-130223-Konstantine-Baptism-IMG_9426-Edit1

There are big moments in every life and I spend a great deal of my time photographing one of the biggest, weddings. Occasionally, however, I get to photograph one of the first, a baby’s baptism. Growing up protestant, I saw baptisms that were slightly more low key with a dribble of holy water on the baby’s forehead. Greek ceremony’s are big, beautiful riots of color, sound and demonstrative joy and I just can’t get enough of them! A few months ago, Sophia’s baptism was my first greek ceremony and I spent much of my time in awe of the rituals and deep focus on family. Most recently, I had the honor of documenting the baptism of little Konstantine at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox ChurchI was in photographic heaven.
